American Bar Association’s Section of Intellectual Property Law
Kira Alvarez serves as the Legislative Consultant for the American Bar Association’s Section of Intellectual Property Law. In this role, working with the ABA Governmental Affairs Office, she advocates on behalf of the Section before Congress and the Executive Branch, including the USPTO; advises the Section’s leadership on current and potential legislation; and also coordinates activity relating to the courts, including the filing of amicus briefs before the US Supreme Court.
Kira has 20 years of professional experience in intellectual property and international affairs in both the public and private sectors. She has held lead roles with the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), the U.S. Department of Commerce, Shire, AbbVie, Time Warner and Eli Lilly. With USTR she served as Chief Negotiator and Deputy Assistant USTR for IP Enforcement during the Obama Administration. She previously served in that office from 2001-2003 as the Director for Intellectual Property Rights.
She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Harvard University, and her JD/MSFS from Georgetown University.
